Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) made legal in New York State
On September 26, Governor David Paterson signed into law a bill that allows health care practitioners to use EPT to treat partners of patients infected with Chlamydia. EPT is the clinical practice of treating sex partners of patients diagnosed with Chlamydia or gonorrhea by providing prescriptions or medications to the patient for use by his/her partner without the partner requiring a physician exam. This bill has been on the Health Department’s legislative agenda for 3 years; its passage and signing into law will give providers a critical tool for addressing the high rates of Chlamydia infection and re-infection in New York. The law goes into effect in late December, 2008.
